b. Obtain the Tibet Travel Permit

Before you board the flight to get into Lhasa, you need to get the Tibet Travel Permit, which will use your Chinese Visa and passport for application. Since individual application is not allowed according to the policy, international tourists need to contact a local travel agency which will help to apply for the permit.

As it will need at least one week of business days to get the permit issued, it is recommended to start your application in advance. In peak travel season, you may need to contact us and send us your documents two weeks earlier before your tour departure date.

c. Get to the Airport for Boarding

To board the flight from Guangzhou to Lhasa, you need to go to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, which is about 28 kilometers away from the downtown area. The Metro Line 3 of Guangzhou city can bring passengers to the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of the airport. It is advised to leave for the airport earlier, to reserve at least one hour to go through the checking procedures before boarding.

How to Get to Guangzhou from Hong Kong?

Guangzhou and Hong Kong are close neighbors, only about 130 kilometers away from each other. For many tourists who want to travel from Hong Kong to Tibet, one can first transfer to Guangzhou, to enjoy more convenient transportation. From Hong Kong to Guangzhou, there are trains, public buses and even flights for transfer. And the Hong Kong high speed train could be the top choice for many.

The high-speed train departs from Guangzhou West Kowloon Station, and takes about 50 to 75 minutes to reach Guangzhou South Railway Station. A one-way ticket for adult will be HK$210. If you need to transfer from Guangzhou railway station to the airport, you can first take Metro Line 2 to reach Jiahewanggang and then transfer to Metro Line 3 boarding for airport direction, and finally get to T1 or T2.

Besides, there is also the traditional way – Guangzhou-Kowloon Through Train, which can bring you from Hong Kong Kowloon to Guangzhou East Railway Station. Taking about 1:55 hours, the train will cost HK$210 for first class seat and HK$250 for premium class.

Flying from Guangzhou to Lhasa via Chengdu or Chongqing

If you miss the direct flight from Guangzhou to Lhasa, you can also choose to take a connecting flight. The most recommended cities for a stop are Chengdu and Chongqing, as both are on the flight route from Guangzhou to Lhasa, and provide sufficient flight choices.

For taking flight from Guangzhou to Lhasa via Chengdu, one will take about 2.5 hours to fly from Guangzhou to Chengdu, and then fly from Chengdu to Lhasa directly. The flight from Chengdu to Lhasa departs a dozen times per day, with no stop on the way, only taking about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
