How to Get to Tibet from Xi’an
Xi’an to Tibet by Train
The Xi’an to Lhasa train departs two times every day in the morning respectively at 9:54 am and 11:22 am. It takes about 30 hours to run through a rail line of 2864 km before arriving at Lhasa Railway Station. The railway station in Xi’an is actually a midway stop of the trains to Tibet from Guangzhou and Shanghai. Although the trains from Xi’an leaves several times per day, there is no guarantee of getting a ticket on one of the trains passing through. Therefore, it is recommended to book your train ticket as early as possible, especially when you plan to travel to Tibet by train during the high season, like Summer Vacation and National Day etc.
Xi’an to Tibet by Flight
There are six direct flights flying from Xi’an to Lhasa every day, separately operated by several airlines. It takes about 3 to 4 hours for the whole travel time, with a stopover in Xiahe or Xining for some flights. Most of the flights from Xi’an depart in the morning, allowing you to reach Lhasa around noon time. As the altitude change during your flight journey is quite big, from 405 m to 3650 m, you’d better take some measures to prevent from altitude sickness.
Xi'an to Xining and then to Tibet
A good option of getting to Tibet from Xi’an is to first fly to Xining from Xi’an and then take the train from Xining to Lhasa. As the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Xining offers the most frequent trains to Lhasa, which means there is more chance of getting a Tibet train ticket here than in other gateway cities across China. The train from Xining to Lhasa also provides the shortest train ride to Tibet while covers all the highlights along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The flights from Xi’an to Xining takes off more than 10 times per day, and will arrive in Xining in about 1 hour and 35 minutes. By this way, you will not only save time but also enjoy a more comfortable journey to Tibet.
