Lhasa-Shigatse Railway to be Opened in September

The Lhasa-Shigatse Railway is expected to be opened in September, 2014.

The main construction project of the railway has been completed recently. Authority said the next step will be centered on building houses, roadbed and green belt, definitely speaking, the train tracts will be reorganized in May, and the station buildings will be completed in June, as well as the acceptance check will be finished in the following two months.

Up to Mar. 8, the construction of 116 bridges and 29 tunnels had been completed; meanwhile, 13 stations had also been generally finished.

With a total length of 253 kilometers, the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway is expected to reach a speed of 120 km/h. It will only take two hours from Lhasa to Shigatse after the railway being opened to traffic, according to a calculation by the Lhasa-Shigatse Railway Office.

Besides the speed, its carrying capacity will also be very high. It is said the Chushur County Station, with the largest passenger volume, is predicted to hold 10,000-person-time travelers during peak hours each day.

The Lhasa-Shigatse Railway, 3,600 to 4,000 meters above the sea level, is located in southwest Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It runs down along the Lhasa River and then up along the Yarlung Zangbo River.

To protect the relatively fragile ecology along the railway, its construction project has strictly adhered to a series of regulations emphasizing on environmental protection. For instance, the elevated railway is constructed in order to make way for animal migration.
