For tourists who want to travel to Tibet from Hong Kong by train, the current feasible option is quite time-consuming and compressive. As there is no direct Hong Kong to Lhasa train available, you will generally need to first take a short train to Guangzhou from Hong Kong, and then take the Tibet train from Guangzhou to Lhasa. The train from Guangzhou to Lhasa runs for nearly 53 hours, covering the longest journey among all trains to Tibet.

Although there is no high speed train planned from Hong Kong to Lhasa for the time being, the opening of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong High Speed Train will also add more convenience for tourists planning to travel to Tibet from Hong Kong by train . With more high speed trains connecting the mainland cities in China, tourists can first enjoy a fast train journey to one of the gateway cities to Tibet, and then head to Lhasa from there.

What is Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong High Speed Train?

The Guangzhou - Shenzhen - Hong Kong high speed train has recently started running. It takes only 48 minutes to travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou by high speed train. The high speed train runs between Guangzhou South Station and Kowloon West Station in Hong Kong, passing by five stations on the way, including the Shenzhen North Railway Station. Meanwhile, bullet trains from Hong Kong will connect 17 major cities in mainland China, providing a more convenient train travel experience between Hong Kong and mainland cities. Facilities onboard

Passengers departing from Shenzhen or Guangzhou to Hong Kong will take the Vibrant Express train operated by the MTR. The train has a total of eight cabins, with more than 600 seats of first class and second class. The train is designed to provide a comfortable boarding experience for tourists, and each seat back can be adjusted by itself. Each cabin is provided with wheelchair space and a barrier-free toilet. In addition to free charging and Wi-Fi, the train also provides self-service hot water.

Rail Line Route of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong High Speed Train

The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Railway, also referred to as Guangzhou - Shenzhen - Hong Kong Express Rail Link, is a high-speed railway mainly linking Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong in south China. It is also an extension of the Beijing Guangzhou High Speed Railway. Covering a total length of 146 kilometers, the route consists of two sections:

Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong High Speed Rail It takes only 48 minutes to travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou by high speed train.

Guangzhou – Shenzhen: this section of railway extends from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Shenzhen North Railway Station, and has been put into use in 2011. At present, there are G-series high speed trains and D-series bullet trains running between two cities. The design speed of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen section is 350 km/h, and the operation speed is 300 km/h.

Shenzhen – Hong Kong: this section has been opened on September 23, 2018, since its construction started in January, 2010. The design speed of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong section is 200 km/h.

Schedule of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong High Speed Train

Since September 10, 2018, passengers can book the ticket of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high speed trains from the date of September 23, 2018. Dozens of G-series high speed trains from Hong Kong to Guangzhou depart from early morning to late night. It will take only take low to 48 minutes for the high speed train running from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Guangzhou South Railway Station. There are totally seven stations involved in the train journey, namely, Guangzhou South, Qingsheng Station, Humen Station, Guangmincheng Station, Shenzhen North, Futian Station and Hong Kong West Kowloon Station.

High speed trains to Hong Kong from Shenzhen Futian and Shenzen North are also available, which respectively require 14 minutes and 23 minutes for the train rides. Besides, there are a number of high speed trains running between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, allowing tourists to take a short train ride between the two cities. Get to Tibet from Guangzhou by Train!

Getting to More Mainland Cities from Hong Kong by High Speed Train

By the time the whole rail line of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong high speed railway is fully opened, tourists can take a bullet train from Hong Kong to 17 major cities in mainland China. And long-distance trains from Hong Kong can directly reach 14 cities in the Mainland such as Beijing and Shanghai.

Hong Kong to Beijing High Speed Train

At present, there are two ways for tourists to take a train to Beijing from Hong Kong. The train from Hong Kong to Beijing (Z98) runs on even days in each month from Hong Kong Kowloon Station to Beijing West Railway Station, and takes about 24 hours on the way. Besides, tourists can first take a short train ride to Guangzhou, and then transfer to the high speed train from Guangzhou to Beijing. The high speed trains between Guangzhou and Beijing leaves 5 times every day, and only take 8 hours to reach Beijing West Railway Station.

After the direct high speed train from Hong Kong to Beijing starts its service, it will only take 8 hours 30 minutes, largely saving the travel time between the two cities. Tourists will also have no more need for transfers on the way. In this occasion, tourists who want to travel to Beijing from Hong Kong by train will enjoy a more comfortable and time-saving train journey.

Hong Kong to Shanghai High Speed Train

The Shanghai–Kowloon through train is the regular train currently running between Hong Kong and Shanghai. It departs every other day from Hong Kong Kowloon and takes about 20 hours to arrive in Shanghai. The return train also leaves every other day from Shanghai to Hong Kong.

With the opening of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong high speed railway, tourists can take the direct high speed train from Hong Kong to Shanghai instead. According to the plan, it will only take 8 hours 17 minutes to run through the total distance of 1,991 km between Hong Kong and Shanghai. And the high speed train is scheduled to depart every day, providing more chances for tourists to travel between the two modern cities.

Hong Kong to Chengdu High Speed Train

Although there is no direct high speed train between Hong Kong and Chengdu, tourists can also find it very easy to get to Chengdu from Hong Kong by high speed train. You can first take the high speed train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, and then transfer to the bullet train to Chengdu from Guangzhou.

The high speed train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou leaves every 30 minutes and only takes one hour. As to the bullet train from Guangzhou to Chengdu, it departs nine times per day from 6:39 am to 14:13 pm, and only takes 9 hours to reach Chengdu East Railway Station. Therefore, the total travel time from Hong Kong to Chengdu by high speed train can as low as 10 hours. And tourists can plan a flexible train journey owing to the frequent trains available every day.
