The tour starts from the classic and modern city of Shanghai, where the Yu Garden, Nanjing Road, the Bund and other popular attractions will be the must-sees for you to know the charm of city. Then taking the high speed train to Beijing, you will head to the ancient capital city and to visit its famous cultural sites and world heritages, including Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace. You will also climb up to the Great Wall - the eighth wonder of the world. After that, the Tibet train from Beijing to Lhasa will bring you to the snow land of Tibet. There you will enjoy a 2-day Lhasa sightseeing as the end of this discovery trip, with a visit to some iconic attractions like Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street etc.

Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1 Arrival in Shanghai

Welcome to Shanghai! Upon your arrival, your tour guide will meet you and escort you to your hotel. The rest of the day is for you to have a good rest or explore the surroundings on your own.

Day 2 Shanghai Sightseeing: Yu Garden, Yuyuan Bazaar, Shanghai World Financial Center, Nanjing Road, the Bund

Today, you will explore this classic and modern city of Shanghai. We will start with the fascinating Yu Garden, the original private residence of a senior Government administration in the Ming Dynasty. Neighboring to the Yu Garden, there is a lively market called Yuyuan Bazaar, where you can shop some specialties. Then we will move to Shanghai World Financial Center, the supertall skyscraper equipped with the highest sightseeing platform in the world.

In the afternoon, we will head to the renowned pedestrian street of Nanjing Road to take a nice stroll. You can enjoy the local snacks or shop some handicrafts and souvenirs, while appreciating those distinctive architecture. After that, we will enjoy another stroll along the Bund, where you will get amazed by the spectacular view of Huangpu River and dazzling light from buildings of Pudong.

Day 3 Shanghai Sightseeing and high speed train to Beijing

In the morning, we will first visit the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center and Jade Buddha Temple. As an important window for publicity of Shanghai, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center will let tourists (especially the first-time visitors) have a better understanding of this charming city. And the Jade Buddha Temple is venerable Buddhist temple, built to keep two jade Buddha statues which were brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen.

After that, you will be escorted to the railway station for the bullet train to Beijing from Beijing.

Upon arrival, you will be picked up and transferred to the hotel in Beijing.

Day 4 Day tour to explore ancient Beijing - Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace

Your guided tour starts with a visit to the famous Forbidden City, which was the Chinese Imperial Palace from around 1420 to 1912. Set right in the center of Beijing, it now houses the Palace museum. The Temple of Heaven is your next stop, which was constructed from 1406 to 1420 during the reign of the Yongle Emperor. The complex was extended and renamed Temple of Heaven during the reign of the Jiajing Emperor in the 16th century.

Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing, Summer Palace is the largest and most well preserved royal park in China, and is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens, and palaces. These beautiful attractions show visitors what life was like for the royal household in ancient China, and how the Chinese emperors managed their empire.

Day 5 Day tour to Mutianyu Great Wall

No tour of China would be complete without a visit to the Great Wall, the largest man-made structure on the planet, which can be seen from orbit. This tour shows the great strength of the Chinese Empire, and the wall protected the ancient Chinese from invasion by their enemies from the north. The Mutianyu section of the wall is 2,250 meters long, and includes 22 watchtowers, making it one of the most protected sections of the entire wall. Mutianyu is the longest, fully restored Great Wall section open to tourists.

Day 6 Board the train to Lhasa from Beijing

Today is free for you to explore the capital city of China until you board the train to Lhasa. The train departs from Beijing West Railway Station, Train Z21 from Beijing to Lhasa departs at 20:10. It takes about 1 hour to check in as the train takes about 1000 passengers. Please be sure to arrive in train station 1 hour and a half before the train departure. Your Tibet Permit will need to be checked when you check in.

Day 7 Train to Lhasa

It is quite a long journey that will take about 41 hours, two days and two nights in the Train, at the first day you will pass through two important provincial capital cities in northwest China, Lanzhou and Xining. Xining is known as the beginning of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Travelling along the rail line, you could see the scenery of countryside and city in northwest China. The last stop for today is Xining, where you will arrive at about 15:10.

Day 8 Scenery View of Tibet Railway, arrive in Lhasa at about 13:03

Today, you will witness the most beautiful scenery of Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the land of snows, the desert, the grassland, the ice mountains, the lakes will continually appear and strongly attract your heart.

You will arrive in Lhasa at about 13:03, your tour guide will hold a board with your name on it and the exit of the train station to welcome you. A private car will take you from the train station to the reserved hotel.

Day 9 Lhasa Sightseeing: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkor Street (B&D)

Today, you’ll pay a visit to the famous Potala Palace, the world culture heritage. You can explore its audience halls, the jeweled and Golden burial chortens (stupa Tombs) of past Dalai Lamas, and tremendous number of Buddhist frescoes, thangkas, combinations of mandala, etc.

Then tourists will head to the holiest temple in Tibet, the Johkang Temple, built during Songtsen Ganpo's reign by princess Wencheng of Tang dynasty, 647 A.D. Here you can observe sincere pilgrims making prostration in front of Jokhang Temple. While entering inside the temple, you can see the holiest statue of Buddha. Around the monastery is the famous Barkhor Street, where you can do the kora with pilgrims and locals. And then we’ll go to explore the old market and you may have chance to see the traditional jewelry trading between people from different part of Tibet.

Finally, we’ll taste Tibetan tea with locals in tea house and enjoy a welcome dinner  at night.

Optional:

After finishing the sightseeing, if time allows, you may go with tour guide to visit Tibetan handicraft art or Tibetan Traditional Medicine center. Besides, you can also choose to upgrade your tour to enjoy Tibetan Culture Show in the evening (fr. 60USD).

Day 10 Lhasa Sightseeing: Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery (B)

Today, you will visit two important monasteries in Lhasa, the Drepung and the Sera. Drepung Monastery, the largest monastery in Tibet, was founded by Jamyang Choeje in 1416. Situated at the foot of Gebeiwoze Mountain, it was once home to more than 10000 monks. Here you can see the biggest monastery kitchen inside and then pay a visit to the Buddhist Sculpture Carving near Drepung.

After having lunch, you’ll continue to visit the Sera Monastery, which was founded in 1419 by Tsongkapa's disciple Jamchen Choeje. The most interesting thing is to see monks debating in the courtyard at around 3-5 in the afternoon. Besides, you can also see the colorful Rock Painting of Buddha and the three sand Mandalas and then visit the Tibetan religious text printing house.

Day 11 Depart from Lhasa (B)

The driver will take you to airport or train station.
